Did you know that Redding residents use an average of 240 gallons of water a day, per person? That's 720 gallons a day for a three-person family, over half of which goes to watering your lawn. The snow pack in this area is currently only 18% of what it should be now, and we are being told to cut back on our water use -- Bella Vista is asking people to cut back by 40%! There are many ways of doing this, but the easiest is by cutting back water use on your lawn. How to do this without ending up with a crispy brown lawn? Here are some tips:
- First and most obvious: only water as much as you need to. If water is running down the street when you water, it's too much. If your lawn stays mushy for very long, it's too much. In fact, it is healthiest for your lawn for the ground to dry out between waterings. This helps to avoid fungal growth, which can damage grass. Lawns don't need to be watered until the blades begin to wilt. Don't want to need to bother with checking your lawn all the time? We can help you install a soil hydrometer, which automatically only lets your lawn be watered when the soil gets dry.
- Cut your grass a little higher than you're used to. The shade from the grass will do much to help keep moisture in the soil. It also helps to keep weeds from growing in your lawn.
- Replace your current sprinkler spray heads with water saving nozzles. This alone can save up to 30% by ensuring more of the water gets into the ground instead of evaporating into the air.
- Use of our Smart Lawn topical treatment will enable you to cut back your irrigation by another full 50%! In addition, it helps to eliminate brown patches caused by drier areas in your lawn. Treatment is only 7.5¢ per square foot (for lawns 500sq.ft. and above), and lasts up to five years (although yearly treatment is recommended). Putting down new sod? Use our treatment first, for only 4¢ a square foot!
